Full course description
This course introduces the basics of American Sign Language (ASL). This online course is designed with several 10-15 minute videos, ranging from topics such as gestures, body language, ABCs, colors, pronouns, everyday signs, common phrases, people, hobbies, time and calendar, verbs and directions, food and drinks, and animals and sports.
Participants can asynchronously select up to four videos of interest for self-paced learning and practice to develop basic conversational skills in ASL. Participants are encouraged to actively practice the signs they are learning. Guidance and questions will be available for reflective practice in Canvas.
Outcomes: • Converse in American Sign Language in everyday life situations using correct grammar and appropriate non-manual markers • Identify linguistic features that clearly establish American Sign Language (ASL) as a distinct and unique language • Learn social conversational etiquette required when using ASL. • Talk about daily activities, and events in ASL.
