Full course description
This crash course is an introduction to the Deaf community as a linguistic and cultural minority group in the United States. Guided by a culturally Deaf professional who is bilingual in American Sign Language and English and presented through a webinar format, the course provides participants the opportunity to quickly observe and understand the multi-faceted aspects of the daily life of a D/deaf individual and their values, beliefs, and experiences as shaped by their experiences of being D/deaf. Specific yet brief information will be shared in the areas of history, communication and language, education, deaf humor, daily challenges to gain communication accessibility, community involvement, and current events. Participants will be encouraged to share reflections via several key aspects on Canvas, facilitated by a district D/deaf staff member.
